Haggie Support
Haggie is a wee creature that lives around the notch on your Mac. If something isn't working, or you have a question, the answer may be below. If not, email us.
We're a small studio and we read every email. We aim to reply within a few working days. It helps to tell us: your Mac's model (in the Apple menu, choose About This Mac), your version of macOS, your version of Haggie (shown at the top of Haggie's Settings), and what happened, and what you expected. Your email is used only to help you. See our privacy policy.
Getting started
What do I need?
A Mac running macOS 14 or later. Haggie is made for MacBooks with a notch, and works on other Macs too.
How do I look after Haggie?
Haggie starts as an egg in its burrow. Click the notch to open the burrow, then click the egg to hatch it. After that you can feed it, play with it, stroke it and tuck it in.
For a few tips, open Settings and choose Guide.
Where are the settings?
Click the notch to open the burrow, then click the gear at the top. Or click Haggie's icon in the menu bar and choose Settings….
Finding Haggie
I can't see Haggie.
Haggie spends most of its time hidden. Bring the pointer to the notch and it leans out. Or click Haggie's icon in the menu bar and choose Show Haggie.
An egg stays in its burrow, so nothing shows around the notch until it has hatched.
Haggie also stays out of sight:
- while an app is full screen, or the screen is locked,
- while it's paused (in Haggie's menu, under Pause, choose the ticked item again to end the pause),
- during quiet hours, if you've set them (Settings, then Haggie),
- while a camera is in use, if you've turned off Peek while a camera is on (Settings, then Haggie).
If Haggie seldom peeks out by itself, set Peek frequency to Normal or Nosy.
I can't find Haggie's icon in the menu bar.
macOS hides menu bar icons when there isn't room for them beside the notch. Try quitting another app that has an icon up there, or remove an icon you don't need: hold down the Command key and drag it out of the menu bar.
If your Mac has a Menu Bar section in System Settings, check that Haggie is allowed there.
You can still click the notch to open Haggie's burrow, and the gear at the top of it opens Settings.
My Mac doesn't have a notch.
Haggie still works. When no display has a notch, Haggie draws a stand-in notch at the top of the screen. You can turn this on or off in Settings, under General: Show a stand-in notch when no display has one.
I have more than one display.
Haggie lives on the display with the notch. If no display has one, it lives on your main display, under a stand-in notch.
Haggie has gone away.
If nobody has visited for a few days, Haggie goes off for a wander. It's never ill, and it always comes back. Open it from the menu with Show Haggie and it comes home, often with something it found.
Giving Haggie files
I gave Haggie a file by mistake. How do I get it back?
Haggie never deletes anything. Eaten files go to the Bin (the Trash on some Macs).
- Straight away: click Haggie within 8 seconds, and it coughs the file back up, to where it was.
- Later: open the Bin from the Dock and drag the file back to where you want it.
To have Haggie ask before every meal, open Settings, choose Haggie, and turn on Ask before every meal. To stop it eating files at all, turn off Eat files dropped on the notch, or untick Eat Dropped Files in Haggie's menu.
Haggie won't eat my file.
Haggie takes a file only when it can come out and be seen to eat it. So it won't take one:
- while it's still an egg,
- while a camera is in use,
- while it's paused or out of sight, for example when an app is full screen.
It also refuses anything that could do harm if it went: apps, system folders, your Library folder, your home folder and the folders that come with it (such as Desktop and Documents, though the files inside them are fine), and whole disks.
Haggie asks first before eating a very large file or a folder with a lot in it.
Sound and camera
Haggie makes sounds. Can I turn them off?
Haggie makes a sound only for something you do, and keeps quiet during quiet hours, in a library, and while a camera or microphone is in use. To turn sounds off, untick Sounds in Haggie's menu, or turn off Play sounds in Settings, under General.
Can I stop Haggie appearing during video calls?
Yes. Open Settings, choose Haggie, and turn off Peek while a camera is on. Haggie then stays out of sight around the notch whenever an app is using a camera, and comes back when the camera goes off. You can still click the notch to open its burrow.
Does Haggie use my camera?
No. Haggie checks only whether a camera is on, so it can join in. It never turns a camera on and never sees or records anything, and the camera light doesn't come on because of it. macOS tells an app whether a camera is on only if the app is allowed to ask, which is why the camera is listed for Haggie on the App Store.
Your Mac and your data
Will Haggie slow down my Mac?
It shouldn't. Haggie is built to use next to nothing of your Mac, and does almost no work while it's out of sight. If you think it's using too much, please email us.
Does Haggie collect my data?
No. Haggie never connects to the internet, and everything it remembers stays on your Mac. Our privacy policy has the details.
Can I have Haggie on more than one Mac?
Yes, but each Mac has its own Haggie, which hatches and grows on that Mac. They don't sync.
How do I start again with a new egg?
Open Settings, choose General, and click Reset… beside Reset and get a new egg. Haggie asks first. This can't be undone.
How do I stop Haggie opening when I log in?
Open Settings, choose General, and turn off Open at login.
How do I remove Haggie?
Choose Quit Haggie from Haggie's menu, then drag Haggie from your Applications folder to the Bin.
To remove everything Haggie kept as well, also delete this folder: ~/Library/Containers/com.electricsporran.Haggie (in the Finder, choose Go, then Go to Folder, and paste it in).
Can I have a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find Haggie, and choose to request a refund.
